Wolf Oak Woods $15,000 Challenge
Last year, thanks to you, we successfully raised funds for the care and stewardship of Wolf Oak Woods, just outside of Woodstock.
Now we are raising money to make the final payment on this beautiful 30-acre mosaic of woodland, wetland and prairie in McHenry County! There is $30,000 left on the mortgage of this property. If we raise $15,000, a small group of generous donors will match the other $15,000, allowing us to pay off the mortgage!

About Wolf Oak Woods
At one time 40% of McHenry County was covered with oak woods and savannas. Today, only about 4% of McHenry County has oak woods, and most are on private land. The public has little access to natural areas like these. However, an excellent example of an oak woods remains--Wolf Oak Woods.
The 30-acre property is home to the 350-year-old wolf oak tree, which is 30 feet tall and its trunk is 5 feet wide, with massive limbs that brush the ground. To put it in perspective, the Wolf Oak was here before the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
Thousands of people drive past the Wolf Oak each day. Its highly visible location is a great opportunity to teach people about the natural history of our region and the ecological issues of today. And experience the beauty of nature!
Wolf Oak Woods is more than trees! It's home to wetland, savanna, sedge meadow and a bluff.
It’s a snapshot of what the natural landscape in McHenry County once was.TLC and dedicated volunteers are transforming Wolf Oak Woods into an ambassador site for oak conservation.
You can help preserve and restore one of our county’s oldest natural landmarks, and make McHenry County a better place for generations to come!
TLC bought Wolf Oak Woods in 2017 for $225,000. Thanks to generous donors and pledges from the community, only $30,000 is left on the mortgage. If we are able to raise $15,000, a small group of donors will match the last $15,000, allowing TLC to pay off the mortgage on the property. Thank you for your support!
Restoration Workdays--Another way to help out!
Workdays are a great way to get out in nature with other friendly faces. Wolf Oak workdays are every Wednesday, except the last Wednesday of the month from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Land restoration involves hauling and burning brush on the site and removing invasive species. Please wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes for walking over uneven ground. No need to sign up, just show up! Visit the TLC calendar for more information on workdays.
