Volunteers make a difference in McHenry County
In 2018, 718 TLC volunteers donated 2,485 hours of their time to help preserve land in McHenry County with The Land Conservancy!
Volunteer work is so important that many organizations place a monetary value on that time. At $20 per hour, that would be almost $50,000! ($49,700 to be exact.) But volunteer work isn’t just good for us, it’s good for you too!
The Land Conservancy of McHenry County has a number of volunteer opportunities available, both outside and indoors.
Here are some easy ways to get involved:
Come to a restoration workday. We have opportunities throughout the county each week. Visit our calendar to find a workday near you. No experience is necessary—dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes or work boots and bring a pair of work gloves. We often burn brush at workdays, so wear clothing that won’t cause you to be heartbroken if you get a small burn hole in it.
The more the merrier--bring a friend or a crew! Volunteering is a great time to get a friend or a group involved. Or just bring yourself and make some new friends! Sign up to volunteer.
Plant oak trees. TLC works with municipalities, schools, churches, students and volunteers to promote the next generation of oaks. Oaks need full sunlight and are very slow growing. McHenry County used to have an abundance of oaks, but very few baby oaks are germinating and surviving to adulthood. Planting and caring for them gives a much needed head start. Oak plantings take place in the spring and the fall, and involve digging holes, planting, mulching, setting up protective cages and watering. Sign up to plant oaks.
Help at the TLC office. If working indoors is more your style, from time to time we need the assistance of office volunteers to help prepare our newsletters and other items for mailing. This is a great opportunity to work while seated and converse with other like-minded people! Sign up to volunteer.
Event planning and assistance. Large fundraising events like Art of the Land and our Annual Celebration Brunch would not be possible without the help of our hard-working volunteers! These opportunities can include help planning the event or volunteering at the event itself. Sign up to help out.
If you’d like to participate in the movement to preserve land in McHenry County, we welcome you to volunteer with TLC! You can sign up here to be notified of volunteer opportunities that suit your interests.
