Scheinfeld came to the United States from New Zealand, her homeland, in the 1960s to study at the University of Chicago where she received her PhD in Geography. She and her husband, Dan, have four children. The Scheinfelds live in Chicago, but also spend time at their farm near Marengo where they are becoming increasingly involved in reforestation and forest stewardship practices. Scheinfeld is a consultant for non-profits in the Chicago area. As a free-lance documenter she facilitates and evaluates new programs, and specializes in documenting lessons learned within innovative programs. Her clients have included the Chicago Community Trust, the Chicago Park District, and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation. She is currently documenting the development of an environmental studies program at the University of Chicago for the Donnelley Foundation.
