The Land Conservancy of McHenry County recognized Nancy Gonsiorek for her dedication to natural land and open space preservation. On July 27, 2006, Ms. Gonsiorek’s land was accepted into The Land Conservancy’s Land Heritage Registry, a program that recognizes private landowners for being good stewards of the land. Nancy Gonsiorek lives with her husband, John, sons Matthew and Joey, and cat Bugsy in Crystal Lake. Their home sits on one acre of land in a subdivision. When they moved there 10 years ago, the yard was a typical suburban yard, mostly lawn, with a few trees and shrubs. Over the years, Nancy has added a diverse array of wildflowers, trees, shrubs and grasses, most of which are native to McHenry County. By adding rocks, berms, and trees, she has created different ecosystems that are conducive to different plant species. She has dug a shallow streambed and lined it with rocks so that rainwater flows from the roof, into a downspout, down the stream, and away from the foundation of the house to prevent basement flooding. There is a small pond with fish, frogs and aquatic plants. Native trees and shrubs provide a respite for shade-loving plants and people. Colorful and tall prairie plants nod and wave at the neighbors. Butterflies, birds and insects share the space. The Gonsiorek property stands as proof that you don’t need acres and acres of land to have your own prairie, woodland, savanna, wetland or creek. The Gonsiorek’s have it all in their yard, contributing to the beauty, health and natural character of McHenry County! |
