Economic Benefits of Open Space Protection


The Land Conservancy
is working with several communities and developers in McHenry County to ensure that natural areas are preserved and managed in perpetuity for the benefit of current and future residents.

Healthy natural areas provide clean air,
clean water and groundwater recharge.

We are proud of the commitments to land preservation made by:

The Village of Johnsburg:
Dutch Creek Estates/Dutch Creek Conservation Area


- 37.5 acres of wetland, creek corridor and buffer.
- Permanent conservation easement held by TLC with management agreement paid through HOA and back-up SSA.
- Up-front endowment provided by developer to cover monitoring and legal expenses in perpetuity.
- Contribution to capital equipment fund to be provided.

Remington Grove Subdivision/Dutch Creek West

- 23 acres of creek corridor, wetlands, mitigation areas and buffer.
- Conservation easement held by TLC with management agreement paid through HOA and back-up SSA.
- Up-front endowment provided by developer to cover monitoring and legal expenses in perpetuity.

The City of Woodstock:
Management of Natural Areas

- Management plans prepared for 150 acres at four City preserves.
- City contract with TLC for providing restoration.
- Project includes trail planning, brush clearing, burn training for fire department personnel and invasive species removal.

Riverwoods Subdivision (proposed)/Kishwaukee River Headwaters

- 16 acre river corridor and wetland
- Proposed for donation of land to TLC with up-front endowment paid to cover on-going restoration and management costs
- Restoration stipend proposed

The Village of Wonder Lake:
Meadows of West Bay Subdivision/Wonder Lake Sedge Meadow

- 28 acre natural area and buffer
- TLC holds conservation easement and has perpetual management agreement paid through HOA with back-up SSA
- Up-front endowment provided by developer to cover monitoring and legal expenses in perpetuity

The Village of Lakewood:
Woodland Hills Subdivision/Ballard Road Sedge Meadow

- 55 acre natural area and buffer
- TLC holds conservation easement and has perpetual management agreement paid through HOA with back-up SSA
- Up-front endowment provided by developer to cover monitoring and legal expenses in perpetuity

The Village of Spring Grove:
1000 Oaks Subdivision/Horsefair Springs Natural Area

- 9 acre creek, wetland and buffer
- Donation of land to TLC with 25-50 foot buffer on private home sites and perpetual management agreement paid through HOA with back-up SSA
- Up-front endowment provided by developer to cover monitoring and legal expenses in perpetuity
