McHenry County Farmland is a vital part of our Landscape!
Nearly 60% of the land in McHenry county is currently used for producing agricultural products.
Trends:
- Over the last 15 years (1987-2002), 32,450 acres of farmland were converted to development. That is more than the area of one township (one township with 36 sections is 23,040 acres in size).
- Based on the farmowner survey results, it is reasonable to expect that 10% of the county's remaining farmland will face conversion in the next two years--that is an area equal to another township.
- Between 1987-1997, McHenry County lost more acres of farmland to development than neighboring counties that are developing: McHenry--23,424 acres, Kane--18,020, DeKalb--16,199. (As of 1997, Lake County had only 50,901 acres of farmland left and DuPage County only 17,103 acres of farmland remaining).
